Microneedling for Large Pores: Does It Really Make Them Look Smaller?

Enlarged-looking pores are one of the most common skin concerns, especially across the nose, cheeks and forehead. You'll often see claims that a product or treatment can "shrink" pores. The truth is a little more nuanced, but microneedling can genuinely help pores look smaller and skin look more refined. Here's how.

The short answer: you can't permanently change the size of your pores, which is mostly set by genetics. But microneedling can make them look smaller by firming the skin around them and smoothing overall texture. Most people notice more refined-looking skin after 2 to 3 sessions, about four weeks apart.

Why pores look larger

  • Genetics. Some people simply have larger pores, especially with oily skin.
  • Oil and congestion. Excess oil and build-up stretch pores and make them more visible.
  • Loss of firmness. As skin loses collagen with age and sun exposure, the walls around pores lose support, so pores look wider.
  • Uneven texture. Rough skin creates shadows that make pores stand out.

How microneedling helps pores look smaller

Microneedling prompts your skin to produce fresh collagen and elastin. Over time, this firms the skin around each pore, so pores look tighter and less noticeable. It also smooths and refines overall texture, so light reflects more evenly and pores cast smaller shadows. Better absorption of hydrating serums helps too, as plump, well-hydrated skin makes pores look less obvious.

What microneedling can and can't do

It can It can't
Make pores look smaller and less noticeable Permanently change pore size
Firm the skin around pores Clear blackheads or congestion on its own
Smooth overall texture Control oil production

For the best result, pair microneedling with a good daily routine that keeps pores clear.

Your at-home routine for pores

Choose your cartridge

  • 12-pin: ideal for the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin
  • 24-pin: for wider areas like the cheeks

Step by step

  1. Make sure skin is clear of active breakouts.
  2. Pause exfoliating acids and retinoids a few days before.
  3. Double cleanse to remove oil and SPF, then disinfect your skin, hands and pen.
  4. Attach a new, sealed cartridge and set 0.6mm and a low speed.
  5. Apply hyaluronic acid as a glide.
  6. Glide in small, overlapping strokes. On the nose, use short strokes and keep the skin taut.
  7. Finish with more hyaluronic acid and a light, fragrance-free moisturiser.

Repeat about once every four weeks. For a glow in between, add a nanoneedling session in the middle of the month.

Daily habits that keep pores looking small

  • Cleanse twice daily with a gentle cleanser.
  • Use a salicylic acid (BHA) product on non-needling days to help keep pores clear, pausing it for 72 hours around sessions.
  • Don't skip moisturiser, even with oily skin. A light, non-comedogenic formula works well.
  • Wear SPF every day to protect collagen.
  • Avoid squeezing, which can stretch pores and leave marks.

What to expect

  • Within a week: smoother, more hydrated skin.
  • After 2 to 3 sessions: more refined-looking texture and less noticeable pores.
  • After 3 to 6 sessions: firmer-looking skin with a smoother finish.
