Preparing Your Skin

Good preparation helps your session go smoothly and lowers the chance of irritation. Start thinking about it a few days before you microneedle.

In the days before

  • Stop retinoids (retinol, retinal, tretinoin and similar) in the area for 3 to 5 days.
  • Stop exfoliating acids (AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acid, and BHAs such as salicylic acid) and scrubs for at least 3 days.
  • Avoid sunburn and tanning. Don't microneedle sunburnt, tanned or peeling skin.
  • Leave a gap after other treatments. Avoid waxing, threading, hair removal creams, chemical peels or laser treatments in the area for at least a week before.
  • Check your skin. Don't microneedle over active breakouts, cold sores, cuts, rashes or any irritated or infected skin. Wait until it has fully healed.

If you take prescription medication or have used isotretinoin in the last 6 months, check our safety guide and speak to your doctor first.

Patch test first

Before your first full session, and before using any new serum alongside Olapen, do a patch test:

  1. Choose a small, discreet area, such as along the jawline.
  2. Treat it as you would in a full session, at the lowest depth setting.
  3. Apply the serum you plan to use.
  4. Wait 24 to 48 hours.

Mild pinkness that fades within a day or two is normal. If you notice lasting redness, swelling, itching, a rash or any other reaction, don't go ahead with a full session.

On the day

  • Cleanse thoroughly. Remove all makeup, sunscreen and skincare with a gentle cleanser, then pat dry.
  • Disinfect. Wipe the area with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.
  • Keep it clean. Wash your hands, tie your hair back and work on a clean surface.
  • For the scalp: wash and dry your hair beforehand, and don't use styling products.
  • For the body: if you shave the area, do it the day before, not the same day.
