Microneedling for Thinning Hair in Women

Thinning hair is often thought of as a men's issue, but it's very common in women too. It tends to look different: rather than a receding hairline, women more often notice a widening parting, less volume on top, or a ponytail that feels thinner. Scalp microneedling is a gentle, at-home step many women add to their routine. Here's how to approach it.

The short answer: scalp microneedling may support fuller-looking hair, especially combined with scalp products. Check with your GP first, as thinning in women can have causes worth looking into. Then use a 24-pin or 36-pin cartridge at 0.6mm along your partings every 2 weeks, and allow 3 to 6 months before judging results.

How thinning often looks in women

  • A widening parting, often the first sign
  • Less volume on top and at the crown
  • A thinner ponytail
  • More hair in brushes or the shower

Check with your GP first

Thinning hair in women can be linked to things like low iron, thyroid changes, hormonal shifts, stress, illness or having a baby. Many of these are easy to check. See your GP before starting if your thinning:

  • came on suddenly, or after illness, stress, surgery or a new medicine
  • started after pregnancy or around menopause
  • comes with itching, soreness, redness, scaling or patches
  • comes with other changes like tiredness or irregular periods

How microneedling may help

Scalp microneedling creates tiny channels that prompt the scalp's own renewal processes and help scalp products absorb more effectively. Most research has looked at microneedling combined with products like minoxidil. Women use minoxidil too, though product strengths and instructions can differ, so ask your pharmacist which is suitable. Read more in Microneedling With Minoxidil.

Your at-home routine

Cartridge and depth

  • 24-pin for working along partings and the hairline
  • 36-pin for wider areas on top and at the crown
  • Depth: start at 0.6mm. Move to 0.8mm or 1.0mm only after several comfortable sessions.

Step by step

  1. Wash and dry your hair the day before or that morning. Avoid styling products.
  2. Disinfect your hands and pen, and wipe your scalp along the partings. Let it dry.
  3. Attach a new, sealed cartridge and set 0.6mm and a low speed.
  4. Start with your natural parting. Apply a little hyaluronic acid and glide slowly along it, holding the pen at 90 degrees.
  5. Make new partings about 1 to 2cm either side, and repeat across the thinning area.
  6. Finish with a little more hyaluronic acid.

Long hair? Clip sections out of the way, and work slowly so the pen doesn't catch.

How often

Every 2 weeks at 0.6mm; every 3 to 4 weeks at deeper settings.

Aftercare

  • Wait 24 hours before washing your hair.
  • Avoid dye, bleach, perms and chemical straightening for at least a week.
  • Skip tight hairstyles and heated tools for a day or two.
  • Protect your parting from the sun.
  • If you use minoxidil, ask your pharmacist how long to wait before applying it.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Speak to your GP or midwife before microneedling or using scalp products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Shedding after having a baby is common and often settles on its own within months.

Habits that support fuller-looking hair

  • Be gentle when brushing and styling, especially when hair is wet.
  • Avoid very tight styles that pull on the hairline.
  • Eat a balanced diet with enough protein and iron.
  • Use heat protection with styling tools.

Realistic timelines

  • Months 1 to 2: a healthier-feeling scalp.
  • Months 3 to 4: some women notice fine new hairs along the parting.
  • Months 4 to 6: fuller-looking hair becomes more visible in photos.
