What to Use With Your Olapen

Straight after a session, the tiny channels in your skin mean products absorb far more than usual. That's great for gentle, hydrating ingredients, but it also means harsh or irritating ones can cause problems. Keep it simple.

Good to use during and after a session

  • Hyaluronic acid: the go-to glide serum. It hydrates, helps the pen move smoothly and is well tolerated by most skin.
  • Peptides: simple peptide serums are a popular choice after microneedling.
  • Barrier support: a gentle moisturiser with ceramides, glycerin or panthenol helps skin recover.

Whatever you choose, look for products that are fragrance-free, have a short ingredient list and come from a clean, freshly opened container. Patch test anything new first (see preparing your skin).

Avoid straight after a session

Wait at least 72 hours, or until your skin feels completely normal, before using:

  • Retinoids: retinol, retinal, tretinoin and similar
  • Exfoliating acids: AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) and BHAs (salicylic)
  • Strong vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid serums)
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Fragrance and essential oils
  • Products high in drying alcohol
  • Scrubs and exfoliating tools
  • Makeup (wait at least 24 hours)

Never apply anything during a session that isn't designed for use on skin. Products not meant to go beneath the surface, such as some DIY mixes or products intended for injection, can cause serious reactions.

On the scalp

A plain hyaluronic acid serum works as a glide on the scalp too. Many people use microneedling alongside hair-loss products. Some of these, such as minoxidil, are medicines, and microneedling can increase how much is absorbed. If you use a medicated product, ask your pharmacist or GP how long to wait after a session before applying it.

Your everyday routine

Between sessions, there's no need to change much. Gentle cleansing, a good moisturiser and daily SPF 30 or higher will support your results. Active ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C can stay in your routine, as long as you pause them before and after each session (see aftercare).
