Olapen microneedling pen for combination skin

Microneedling for Combination Skin

Combination skin is one of the most common skin types: an oilier T-zone across the forehead, nose and chin, with normal or drier cheeks. It can make choosing products tricky, and the same goes for microneedling. The good news is that a few small adjustments let you treat each zone the way it needs.

The short answer: microneedle the whole face with a 12-pin cartridge at 0.6mm every four weeks, focusing on texture and pores in the T-zone and keeping passes lighter on drier cheeks. Afterwards, use a light gel moisturiser on the T-zone and a richer cream on the cheeks.

Understanding combination skin

Zone Typical concerns Microneedling focus
T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) Shine, enlarged pores, congestion Texture and pores
Cheeks Dryness, tightness, sometimes sensitivity Hydration and gentle renewal
Around the eyes Dryness, fine lines Nano only

Your zone-by-zone routine

  1. Cleanse with a gentle, balanced cleanser. Double cleanse the T-zone if you wear SPF or makeup.
  2. Disinfect your skin, hands and pen, and let everything dry.
  3. Attach a new, sealed 12-pin cartridge and set 0.6mm and a low speed.
  4. Apply hyaluronic acid section by section, using a little more on the cheeks.
  5. T-zone: work across the forehead, nose and chin with a few overlapping passes, using short strokes on the nose.
  6. Cheeks: glide with lighter, fewer passes.
  7. Eyes: switch to a Nano cartridge for the bone around the eyes.

Zone-by-zone aftercare

  • Everywhere: hyaluronic acid straight after.
  • T-zone: a light, non-comedogenic gel moisturiser.
  • Cheeks: a richer, fragrance-free cream with ceramides.
  • Next morning: a lightweight SPF across the whole face.

Bringing back your usual products

  • Salicylic acid on the T-zone: after 72 hours
  • Niacinamide: after about 48 hours, if skin is calm
  • Retinol: after 72 hours, starting gently on the cheeks

Adding nanoneedling

Nanoneedling between needle sessions helps hydrate drier cheeks and gives the whole face a glow. Leave at least a week either side of a needle session. See nanoneedling vs microneedling.

Balanced care with Olapen

Olapen lets you work at the same safe depth across the whole face while adjusting your passes for each zone. For more on each skin type, see oily skin and dry skin.

Frequently asked questions

Is microneedling good for combination skin?

Yes. It helps refine the T-zone and supports hydration on the cheeks.

Should I use different depths for different zones?

No. Stay at 0.6mm across the face, but use fewer passes on drier areas.

What moisturiser should I use after?

A light gel on the T-zone and a richer cream on the cheeks.

Which cartridge is best?

A 12-pin for the face and Nano for around the eyes.

How often should I microneedle?

About every four weeks.

The bottom line

Combination skin just needs a little zone-by-zone thinking. Use a 12-pin at 0.6mm everywhere, focus on texture in the T-zone, go lighter on the cheeks, and match your aftercare to each zone.
