How Microneedling Works

Microneedling is one of the most widely used ways to refresh and renew the look of your skin. It's simple, it's been used in clinics for years, and with Olapen you can do it at home.

The science, simply put

Microneedling uses very fine needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. They're too small to see, but your skin notices them and responds by starting its natural repair process. Part of that process is making fresh collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin looking firm, smooth and springy.

Collagen production slows as we age, and sun exposure, scarring and stretching break it down further. Microneedling encourages your skin to rebuild it.

Olapen's needles move straight in and out of the skin rather than dragging across it, which keeps each pass precise and controlled.

Microneedling vs nanoneedling

Olapen works with two kinds of cartridge, and they do different jobs.

  • Microneedling (9, 12, 24, 36 and 42-pin): the needles pass into the skin to the depth you set on the pen (0.6mm to 2.0mm). This is what triggers the repair and collagen response, so it's the choice for texture, scarring, firmness, stretch marks and the scalp. Skin needs time to recover between sessions.
  • Nanoneedling (Nano): a field of ultra-fine pins works on the very surface without breaking the skin. It helps your serums absorb and gives a quick glow, with little or no downtime. It's gentler, so it suits sensitive skin, beginners and the delicate area around the eyes, but it won't give the deeper results of microneedling.

Not sure which to use? Our cartridge guide matches each cartridge to your concern and the area you want to treat.

What happens after a session

  • Straight away: skin looks pink, like a mild flush or light sunburn. With needle cartridges you may see some pinpoint bleeding, which stops quickly. The micro-channels help serums absorb more effectively.
  • The first few days: the channels close and redness settles, usually within 24 to 72 hours. Skin may feel tight or dry, and can flake lightly around day 2 or 3.
  • The following weeks: the repair process continues beneath the surface and new collagen gradually forms. This is why sessions are spaced weeks apart.
  • Over several months: with a course of sessions, skin can look smoother, firmer and more even.

Realistic timelines

Microneedling works gradually. Everyone's skin is different, but as a guide:

  • Glow and radiance: often noticeable within a few days of a session.
  • Texture and pores: usually after 2 to 3 sessions.
  • Fine lines and firmness: typically 3 to 6 months of regular sessions, as collagen takes time to form.
  • Scarring and stretch marks: 6 months or more. Expect improvement in how they look, not for them to disappear.
  • Thinning hair: at least 3 to 6 months, because hair grows slowly.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Going deeper or more often won't speed things up, and it raises the risk of irritation. See how often to microneedle for recommended spacing.

Is it right for me?

Microneedling suits most skin types, but it isn't suitable for everyone. Don't microneedle if you have active acne, an infection, open wounds or a skin condition flaring in the area, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Please read our safety guide before your first session, and if you're unsure, speak to a healthcare professional.
